But the headline of recent years is SpaceX: the Starbase Starship factory and launch site at Boca Chica, about twenty miles east, has drawn aerospace engineers, technicians, and construction crews into the area and reshaped its housing market almost overnight. Add the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with its Brownsville campus and School of Medicine, Texas Southmost College, the Valley Baptist and Valley Regional medical centers, and the Brownsville Independent School District — one of the region's largest employers — and the job base runs deeper than the border-town label suggests.

Day to day, Brownsville is warm, green, and unmistakably bicultural — well over ninety percent Hispanic, thoroughly bilingual, its calendar built around the century-old Charro Days fiesta each February that celebrates the friendship between Brownsville and Matamoros, alongside the Sombrero Festival. The Gladys Porter Zoo, the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, and Resaca de la Palma State Park make it one of the great birding destinations in North America, and South Padre Island's beaches lie about twenty-five miles up the road past Port Isabel. It is also a longtime magnet for "Winter Texans," retirees who come down for the mild winters and stay for the pace. Against San Antonio, the cost of living runs markedly lower — Brownsville is regularly ranked among the most affordable metros in the country, with housing especially cheap — though local wages tend to run lower to match. As everywhere in Texas there is no state income tax, so the real trade is a big-city economy for Valley affordability and a near-tropical setting.
