Healthcare and education are the other pillars: Cincinnati Children's Hospital is a nationally ranked pediatric and research center, UC Health and TriHealth run large hospital systems, and the University of Cincinnati, which invented cooperative education, along with Xavier University, feeds a steady stream of graduates into local employers. Add the DHL Americas hub at CVG airport across the river in Kentucky and a freight backbone on the Ohio River itself, and the regional economy stays diversified rather than tied to any single industry.

Day to day, Cincinnati trades San Antonio's flat sprawl and long heat for a denser, greener, four-season river city. Big-league sports run year-round with Reds baseball, Bengals football, and FC Cincinnati soccer at TQL Stadium, alongside a genuinely deep arts scene from the Cincinnati Symphony and Music Hall to the art museum in Eden Park and the zoo made famous by Fiona the hippo, plus homegrown food traditions like Cincinnati chili and goetta and one of the largest German festivals in the country, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. On cost, the metro is broadly affordable: home prices sit near or a touch above San Antonio's in many neighborhoods but tend to buy older, more character-rich housing, and everyday expenses run close to the national average. The honest tradeoff is taxes. Texas has no state income tax, while Ohio levies a state income tax and the City of Cincinnati adds a local earnings tax on top, so it's worth budgeting for the paycheck difference even in neighborhoods where the housing math pencils out.
