The regional economy leans on Lee Health — the area's largest employer, anchored by Gulf Coast Medical Center and HealthPark — along with the Lee County School District, Publix, and corporate names headquartered or heavily staffed here, including Chico's FAS and Gartner, plus nearby Hertz and Arthrex down in Estero and Florida Gulf Coast University just off I-75. Life here is built around the water: Gulf beaches at Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, and Captiva, boating and tarpon fishing on the Caloosahatchee, and spring-training baseball at JetBlue Park and Hammond Stadium.

Compared with San Antonio, the trade-offs are real and worth planning for. Florida, like Texas, has no state income tax, but Southwest Florida real estate generally runs higher per square foot than San Antonio, lots tend to be smaller, and a good share of the inventory is condos and villas rather than the roomy single-family lots common around Bexar County — so many families arrive downsizing their square footage even when they aren't downsizing their budget. Homeowners also plan for notably higher property-insurance and windstorm coverage than they paid in Texas. What you buy in return is the Gulf, the winters, and a slower coastal pace that keeps drawing Texans east.
