Salem is Oregon's capital and third-largest city, a river town of about 175,000 set in the heart of the Willamette Valley, roughly 47 miles south of Portland with the Coast Range rising to the west and the snow-capped Cascades to the east. Salem Health anchors the medical sector as one of the largest hospitals in the state, while Willamette University and Chemeketa Community College drive education. Above all, this is farm country: the Willamette Valley is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world — grass seed, hops, hazelnuts, nursery stock, and wine grapes — and Salem's food-processing heritage lives on in operations like the Kettle Brand potato-chip plant. The Eola-Amity Hills wine country begins just minutes northwest of town, part of the valley's globally regarded Pinot Noir scene.

Lifestyle here trades Texas heat for green. Salem sits about an hour from the Pacific beaches at Lincoln City and Pacific City, and about the same from the Cascade trails and Santiam Pass ski country, while Silver Falls State Park and its Trail of Ten Falls — the crown jewel of Oregon's park system — is a half-hour drive east. The cost picture is a genuine trade-off from San Antonio: Oregon charges no sales tax at all, a welcome change at the register, but it does levy a state income tax that Texans have never paid, and home prices generally run higher than in South Texas. Salem stays notably calmer and more affordable than Portland while sitting close enough to tap the big city's airport and amenities on a day trip.
