The regional economy is a big part of why South Texans transfer here, and it's broader than most people expect. Health care is the metro's largest engine, led by Parkview Health and the Lutheran Health Network; the city's deep insurance roots run through Lincoln Financial Group's major Fort Wayne operations; and advanced manufacturing and logistics fill out the rest. Sweetwater Sound — the country's largest online retailer of instruments and pro audio, founded by Chuck Surack — runs a sprawling campus on the southwest side; Vera Bradley was founded in Fort Wayne and is headquartered just south in Roanoke; General Motors' Fort Wayne Assembly plant near Roanoke builds full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups; Fortune 500 steelmaker Steel Dynamics is headquartered downtown; BAE Systems carries on the city's Magnavox-and-ITT defense-electronics legacy; and the Do it Best hardware co-op is based here too. Interstate 69 north to Michigan and south to Indianapolis, plus the US-24 "Fort-to-Port" Hoosier Heartland corridor east to Toledo, make the metro a genuine distribution hub.

Day to day, Fort Wayne keeps some of San Antonio's easy, car-friendly rhythm but pairs it with short commutes and a cost of living that regularly lands the city near the top of national affordability and best-value rankings — housing, in particular, stretches a South Texas budget much further, and Indiana caps owner-occupied property taxes at roughly 1% of assessed value, a welcome change from Texas's steep property-tax bills. The trade-off to budget for is income tax: Indiana levies a flat state income tax of a little over 3% plus an Allen County local income tax, where Texas has none. Households still get a lot for the money — the nationally top-ranked Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, the downtown Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, the historic 1928 Embassy Theatre, the summer Three Rivers Festival, and Johnny Appleseed's gravesite and park all come with the deal — and the Steuben County lake country to the north, with Pokagon State Park and Lake James, plus a day's drive to Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Columbus, is right up the road.
